LA Times Book Awards Finalists Named

Yesterday the LA Times announced the finalists for the 2009 Book Awards. I was thrilled to see that one of my favorites – Heroic Measures by Jill Ciment – is in the running in the “Fiction” category. My review of this outstanding little book can be found at

Another nominee that I have begun to review is the short story collection, In Other Rooms, Other Wonders, by Daniyal Mueenudin. This engaging set of stories, set in rural Pakistan, is nominated for the Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction. I’ve reviewed the first story, “Nawabdin Electrician,” and will be reviewing others over time. My review is located at

Take a look at the list of finalists. Have you read any? Do you recommend them? Any picks for winners?

  1. That is a great post, I am going to look at these..

“Bury Me Deep” by Megan Abbott
“The Hidden Man” by David Ellis
“Black Water Rising” by Attica Locke
“A Darker Domain” by Val McDermid
“The Ghosts of Belfast” by Stuart Neville

    • I read a review recently on The Ghosts of Belfast, and it sounded great. I’m planning to pick that up to – and add it to my ever-expanding TBR stack!

  2. I haven’t heard of any of them, but congrats to the authors. It must be nice to find that you have read some of them. I love reading books that have been nominated/won awards

    • I especially love it if I’ve read the book BEFORE it gets nominated – makes me feel like I’m extremely discerning! LOL!

What do you think?
